Flash asks a great deal of the reader; it is succinct in
the same way as poetry, it tends to focus on the
essence rather than the detail of a story, and it is part
of the deal that the reader brings something of
their own into the reading of it. It may not be fully closed,
more ‘openly closed’ as Elaine Chew has it Elaine Chew, Endings.

Pretending not to see
When Jodie put on her magic hat, she became invisible; just a space where you could pretend not to see a child.
She ran, crawled, dived, and shot enemies.
Afterwards, they all straggled home with dirt in their hair and grit in their knees, laughing like drains.
When Jodie puts on her metal hat, she becomes invisible; just a uniform where you can pretend
not to see a woman. She runs, crawls, dives and shoots enemies. Afterwards, just the few straggle
home with metal in their heads and no knees to have grit in, and the red, wet drains do not laugh.
